Dreaming of a bucket-list adventure that’s both unforgettable and family-friendly? The Great Barrier Reef is calling, and Cairns, Australia, is the perfect base for your crew! From vibrant coral reefs to local markets and scenic drives, here’s our three-day itinerary to make your family trip Down Under a reality—without breaking the bank.
Day 1: Arrive in Cairns and Dive into the Fun
After landing in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, we checked into the Hilton—budget-friendly with a prime location just a minute’s walk from the reef tour check-in and boats! We stretched our legs with a stroll along the coast, soaking in the tropical vibes and salty breeze. Then, we headed to the Cairns Night Markets, a short walk away and a total steal for family fun. The kids loved exploring the shops, and we grabbed some of the best fish and chips ever—crispy, fresh, and affordable! We also snagged a few souvenirs to remember our adventure, keeping our budget in check.

Day 2: Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef with Sunlover Reef Cruises
The big day—a full-day adventure on the Great Barrier Reef with Sunlover Reef Cruises! We checked in at 9 AM and were back by 5:30 PM, with a tasty lunch included in the price. This tour was a slam dunk for our family, with activities for everyone: glass-bottom boat tours, a semi-submersible boat, the reef’s only waterslide, an underwater observatory, and a small enclosed ocean pool—all covered in the ticket! We brought our 10-month-old, and even Grandma joined the fun. We took turns watching the baby while others snorkeled, but those staying back still had a blast with the semi-submersible tour and the pool, where our little one splashed and spotted fish up close. The variety kept every age entertained, making it worth every penny. Back in Cairns, we grabbed dinner from a local restaurant near the dock.

Day 3: Markets, Scenic Drives, and Port Douglas
We kicked off the day at Rusty’s Markets, a lively spot for fresh produce and local treasures. We savored breakfast at an affordable crêpery, picked up fresh fruit for snacks, and browsed shops for unique keepsakes—all without stretching the wallet. Then, we hit the scenic highway to Port Douglas, a 4-5 hour round trip with stops. The drive was jaw-dropping, with coastal views and lush greenery that had everyone glued to the windows. In Port Douglas, we strolled the main street, shopped for small trinkets, enjoyed yummy ice cream, and had a relaxed lunch at a budget-friendly local spot. The beaches were picture-perfect for a quick photo! After a few hours of fun, we drove back to Cairns, just in time for our flight to Perth.
