With the opening of the new Epic Universe park, Universal Orlando has officially become a 6 or 7-night destination. To see all three theme parks and Volcano Bay, you really need a full week.
But let's be honest—sometimes you are looking for that perfect, quick getaway.
As Utah-based travel planners, we know that a 4-day trip is the "sweet spot." It's the perfect amount of time to conquer the two original parks (Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure) without being rushed. We just did this exact 4-day trip, and it was incredible.
Here is our complete, step-by-step plan for how to do a 4-day Universal Orlando trip from Utah the right way.
Step 1: Booking Your Flight (The Utah Advantage)
This is the most important step for Utah families. Forget driving to SLC. The only way to fly is the Breeze Airways nonstop from Provo (PVU) to Orlando (MCO).
As we covered in our full review of the flight, this route is a game-changer. We were from our front door in Utah County to Orlando International Airport (MCO) in about 5 hours. It's the key to making a 4-day trip feel like 5, because you get most of your arrival day back.
Step 2: Choosing Your Hotel
To make this itinerary work, you must stay at an official Universal Orlando hotel. The #1 perk you need is Early Park Admission.
We stayed at Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort, and for the money, we believe it's the best value on property. It's clean, has an amazing retro theme, and features two massive pools and a lazy river.
Step 3: Getting to Your Hotel
From the MCO airport, you have two main options: a rideshare or the official shuttle.
We tested Universal's SuperStar Shuttle and, honestly, we do not recommend it. It was $39 per person, slow, and a private UberXL would have been faster and cheaper for our group.
The Perfect 4-Day Universal Orlando Itinerary
This is our exact 4-day schedule, modified for the perfect family vacation.
Day 1 (Wednesday): Arrival & Relax at the Hotel
Morning: Take the early Breeze flight from PVU to MCO.
- Afternoon: Catch your Uber (not the shuttle!) to Cabana Bay. Check in, get your park tickets at the desk, and go for a swim in the lazy river.
- Evening: Stay on property and enjoy your hotel. Eat at the Bayliner Diner and try their different food options. Then after dinner, go over to Shake's Malt Shoppe and enjoy Hershey's ice cream. (We highly recommend the cookies and cream milkshake!)
Day 2 (Thursday): A "Chill" Day or Volcano Bay
- This is your "choose your own adventure" day. (This was our training day, and it served as a perfect "resort day".) How you use this middle day is up to you.
- Option 1 (The "Relax" Vibe): Sleep in, enjoy the amazing Cabana Bay pools and lazy river, and explore the hotel's food options.
- Option 2 (The "Water Park" Vibe): This is your Volcano Bay day. Cabana Bay has its own private walking path to the water park, making it the most convenient hotel for this.
- Option 3 (The "No Rest" Vibe): If you want to get even more in, use this as another full park day. This is a great strategy to get in your must-do's or see all the shows and smaller attractions you'll skip on your "sprint" days.
Day 3 (Friday): Full Park Day
- This is your "all-in" day. We've created a complete, step-by-step 1.5-day park itinerary that shows you exactly how to do this.
- Morning: Use Early Park Admission at Islands of Adventure (IOA) to ride Velocicoaster and Hulk.
- Afternoon: Explore Hogsmeade, then park-hop to Universal Studios (USF) for Diagon Alley and other rides.
- Evening: Hop back to IOA to re-ride favorites and see the park at night.
Day 4 (Saturday): Half Park Day & Fly Home
- Morning: This is your "must-do" mission. We used this morning for a deep dive into the Wizarding World. Get up for Early Park Admission, go straight to Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure (it's worth the wait!), then ride the Hogwarts Express to Diagon Alley for breakfast.
- Lunch: Have a final meal, do your last-minute shopping, and head back to the hotel.
- Afternoon: Grab your bags from the great Cabana Bay luggage service, take an Uber to MCO, and catch your nonstop Breeze flight home. You'll be back in Provo by the evening.

Our Final Verdict
While Universal Orlando is now a full-week destination with Epic Universe, this 4 day Universal Orlando itinerary is the perfect, focused getaway. It allows you to fully experience the two original parks and all their magic without being overwhelmed. It's the ideal way for a Utah family to use a long weekend.
